Buddhism had a profound influence on the lives of the people in this part of the world, rejunavated in the later times by kings like Maurya, Ashoka. A number of Buddhists priests are amazed at the true tranquility of Vizag and set up places of worship, Universities etc . From then vizag has been carrying subtle influence of Buddhism and has a special place on the World Buddhist spots. Government of Andhra Pradesh has recognised Vizag as one of the most important Buddhist centers in the state and started developing them as Tourism spots. The sculptures and other items of great heritage value dates back to 2nd Centrury BC to 7th Century AD can be seen in several Buddhist sites.

This part of the state has relics of all the three phases of Budhism - Hinayana, Mahayana and Vijrayana.
Sankaram
This small village around 30 km from Vizag  is the place where a two low contiguous rock hills running east and west which are locally known as Bojjannakonda stands. They contain some notable Buddhist remains.

Pavuralu Konda
24 km from Vizag with a height of 168 meters is situated at an imposing position that commands beautiful view of the sea. There lies 16 cisterns  built for for rain water harvesting the era which built can be dated back to 2nd century AD.

Deriving its name from the presence of rock cut throughs hewn in the bed rock of various shapes, Thotlakonda lies about 15 Km. from Vizag. The archaeological excavations reveals antiquities like Maha stupa Viharas, Votive stupas, etc.
