From Siddhartha to Sakyamuni and finally to the Buddha or the
Enlightened one - an incredible transformation of a prince to an enlightened
teacher, who walked the earth more than 2500 years ago.
As part of the Mauryan Empire during the reign of Emperor Ashoka, This part of
the world evolved as a significant centre of Buddhism. However, according to
some historians, Buddhism came here long before emperor Ashoka converted to
Buddhism, infact as soon as the religion was born. However most stupas found
here were built under the direction of Emperor Ashoka. A remarkable feature of
Buddhist legacy in here is the perfect way it has blended with the local
culture. According to some historians, the forms of buddhist viharas and
chaiytyas have been the underlying influence of south Indian temple
architecture. For the curious tourist the Primary Buddhist centre of interest is
Amaravathi and Nagarjunakonda around 400 Km from here However Vizag have its own
of these in Bavikonda, Pavuralakonda etc. Visitors following the buddhist trails
have many places to visit.
