Kala Chakra
Kalchakra is an annual initiation ceremony for Buddhists
complete with rituals and prayers and is conducted on a large scale across the
globe.
Kalachakra the Buddhist tantric practice belonging to the Highest Yoga Tantras
the empowerment for which has traditionally been given in Tibet to large
gatherings of people. HH the Dalai Lama will be giving the empowerment for the
30th time in his life at Amaravati in January 2006.
Amravati has been chosen due to its Buddhist influence and because Buddha is
said to have taught the Kalchakra here for the first time.
The Kalchakra Root Tantra was taught here on the 15th of the third month, in the
year following Buddha's enlightenment at Shri Dhanyakataka. Buddhism is said to
have flourished in this year from 2nd century BC to 2nd century AD.
This is the 30th Kalchakra Empowerment by the Dalai Lama in his lifetime and is
particularly significant as it coincides with the 2550th anniversary of the
Parinirvana or the Passing Away of Lord Buddha
